Turtle Rescue -- Photos and story from the Jackson Citizen Patriot
|
|
Sharon's patient, an injured map turtle that was found by the side of the road and brought to the Country Garden Veterinary Clinic, is being made road worthy.
Dr. Harshe is using a procedure of positioning orthodontic brackets on each side of the tear and threading a stainless steel wire around them to hold the torn shell together facilitating proper healing of the wound.

When asked about her "turtle rescue" Harshe said, "If more people knew that we take care of wildlife injuries and that we don't charge...more suffering patients would be brought to our clinic."
Open wounds, broken wings and cracked shells are subject to infection. But when repairs are made and in some cases the animals are rehabilitated, the chances of survival are good.
To help with this survival Dr. Sharon keeps a special turtle pond/pen outside the clinic which backs up to very natural wooded acres providing supervised recovery for other forms of wildlife.
